A few notes about our preschool day…
HELLO Arrive at the classroom. Kids stow their lunches, jackets, etc (please have your child be in charge as much as they can so they know which lunch is theirs), say hello to teachers and friends, and goodbye to parents. Our day starts after the children are dropped off, so please aim for being on time…it is much easier on the kids if they do the job of separating/dropoff at the very beginning of the day, so they can then move on to the work and play jobs of the school day.
GYM TIME Our gym at North City has a climbing wall, 'stage' area, and indoor room for kids to run and play games in. There are scooters, hoops, etc available.
Our scheduled times this semester are Monday 930-1030, Thursday 930-1030, Friday 12-130, and 1-130 each weekday. We may or may not use our scheduled time depending on what projects we are working on and the weather. All programs in the building rotate through the gym. The big kids you see are enrolled in HEE (Home Education Exchange). Most of our time the gym is open choice for the children; any dance/movement class we have is usually held during gym time to use the open space. Teachers provide structured games as needed. We typically have a short circle with book/songs as transition to/from the gym.
SNACK A healthy snack is provided. Filtered water is always available. Let us know if your child refuses breakfast, we can usually offer snack early.
PROJECTS , Focus activities and/or stations. In the classroom during this time children are expected to be ‘on task’ but usually have choices to be on task at. We sometimes split into groups. There is much socializing and interaction, and here is where we watch for interests and ideas to “emerge”. Ideas and projects initiated by visiting teachers can be expanded. Group art projects are continued and/or furthered with interested parties. Teachers will post a note about the days’ activities.
LUNCH Lunch is very important to the kids. It both connects them with home and family, and is something they can choose to share with friends. We work on the big jobs of washing up, getting one’s lunchbox, finding a seat, opening containers, asking for help, inviting friends to share without excluding or being rude, saying no or yes if someone asks you to share, cleaning up spills, putting lunch things away, basic table manners…Teachers sit and have lunch with the class and help children individually at their level. Treats will be ‘saved’ for home.
*Please do not send treats in your child's lunch- we will be collecting these to save until after school**We are trying to unclutter our hallway, so extra clothes and lunches will be kept in the classroom*

Field trips are usually tied in with curriculum, but are entirely optional. Family/siblings are welcome to join in. A sign up sheet will be on the sign-in table. We require a check to Tessera at sign up as reservations are prepaid. Tickets are transferable.
Scholastic book orders are offered online at scholastic.com/parentordering.
Class user name: tesserafamilies. Password: cupid. Place orders with your credit card up until the online order due date. Orders are delivered to the classroom for distribution.
